Decades of Dedication – NATO at 75: Securing Peace Through Strength

Join us on the 18th of April from 19:00 – 21:00 at Nieuwspoort for an insightful panel discussion and interactive Q&A session as we celebrate the 75th anniversary of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. The event will feature a blend of expert perspectives from the US and Estonian embassies, alongside academic insights from the field of diplomacy and transatlantic relations, offering a thought provoking glance at the history, present, and future of the Alliance.

We are thrilled to introduce our distinguished panelists, Mr. José Gutierrez: political-military officer at the US embassy, Mr. Lauri Kuusing: Estonian ambassador to The Kingdom of the Netherlands, and Prof. Dr. Giles Scott-Smith, Dean of Leiden University College and professor in transatlantic relations and diplomatic history. Karlijn Jans, senior advisor at the Dutch Ministry of Defence, will be moderating the discussion and the Q&A session.

Ms. Karlijn Jans

Karlijn Jans is a defence expert,
her areas of expertise include NATO,
Dutch and European security, and
respective defense policies. She holds
master degrees from Maastricht
University and King’s College London.
Her professional experience includes
being a strategic analyst at The Hague
Centre for Strategic Studies (HCSS) and
she has worked as a senior defence advisor
at the British Embassy in The Hague.
Currently, she serves as a senior advisor at
the Dutch Ministry of Defence.

Prof. Dr. Giles Scott-Smith

University College and Professor of
Transnational Relations and New
Diplomatic History, will be part of
our panel discussion. His research
interests focus on transatlantic
relations, exploring governmental
and non-governmental ties between
North America and Europe since
World War II. His work covers
the political, economic, and cultural
aspects of transatlantic relations
during and after the Cold War.

Estonian Ambassador MR. Lauri Kuusing

Ambassador Kuusing has represented
Estonia in the Kingdom of Netherlands
since September 2021. Prior to his posting
to The Hague he was Foreign Policy
Adviser to the President of Estonia.
During his diplomatic career he has
covered multiple roles within the
Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs,
including being Deputy Permanent
Representative at the Estonian mission
to NATO and Deputy Head of Mission
at the Estonian Embassy in NATO.

Mr. José Gutierrez – Political and Military Affairs Officer, U.S. Embassy The Hague. U.S. Department of State

José arrived in The Hague in July 2023
as the Political Military Affairs Officer.
He previously served as the desk officer
for Spain, Portugal, and Andorra in
Washington, D.C. since August 2020.
Previous assignments include Pol/Econ
Chief in Matamoros, Mexico, a Consular
and Economic rotation in São Paolo, Brazil,
and Consular Officer in Guatemala City.
Prior to joining state, José was a Lieutenant
Colonel in the U.S. Air Force and flew
RC-135S reconnaissance aircraft, with
multiple combat deployments and tours
at the Defense Intelligence Agency in
Washington, D.C. and the U.S. Embassy
Baghdad, Iraq. He has a master’s degree
in political science from the University of
Texas at San Antonio and a bachelor’s
degree in economics from the University
of Texas at Austin. José was born in Chicago
but grew up in Dallas, Texas. He is married
with two sons and a baby daughter.
