Event report – JASON Writing Workshop

Academic writing is like classical music; public writing is like jazz.

It is now a month since the JASON Writing Workshop, a hybrid event that brought together JASON writers and editors, was organised on the 10th of October. Organised by Laura Gusan and Nick Psomas, the workshop began with an introduction to the JASON Style Guide, the foundation for both our online and print publications. Nick led this session, setting the stage for an outlining of our editorial standards.

Afterwards, one of our writers, Daniel Somart, shared one of his recent articles published as a JASON Sunday Read, ‘From Hope to Horror: Ethiopian Migration to Saudi Arabia‘, offering insights into the research and writing process that brought this impactful piece to life.

The workshop concluded with a thought-provoking lecture from our guest speaker, Prof. Dr. Tahir Abbas, who explored the art of writing for non-academic audiences and highlighted the importance of clear communication in international security. His insights, drawn from a remarkable academic career, provided invaluable guidance for our writers and editors to use in their future publications!

On behalf of the JASON Institute and JASON Editors-in-Chief, we would like to thank all those involved in the organisation, as well as our speakers, Daniel Somart, and Dr. Tahir Abbas.
